A huge congratulations to M.R. Hyde, whose poem, “Panorama Point,” won 1st Prize in the Colorado State Fair Poetry Contest. The Nearby Universe was lucky to get an in-progress peek at this fantastic poem. Hyde also won 3rd prize in the Emerging Artist Division in the Drawing and Printmaking category for her piece, “The Hard Work of Civil Rights.”
Also accepted is “Ute Passing Tava-Kaa-Vi,” a celebration of one of the First Nations that populated Colorado long before the Eastern immigrants arrived. This piece represents the previously named peoples beneath the great Sun Mountain, also called Pikes Peak.
A second new work accepted is “Latent Power,” a representation of the Giant Checkered rabbits that grace our land. It’s no joke that these rabbits are giants in their class. She returned to the use of conte’ crayon on this one and is extremely pleased with the outcome.
Hyde has two pieces in the Academy Art and Frame Company’s Miniatures exhibition this month as well. What a challenge: to produce works with a size limit of 5 x 5 inches! It’s amazing what can be done with such limitations.
The Manitou Art Center 1st Amendment Show in the Intemann Gallery is also exhibiting two of Hyde’s pieces through the end of September. The MAC, located at 513/515 Manitou Ave, Manitou Springs, is open on Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 6pm and on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Check it out!
